Listen Up!

Listen Up! A new campaign by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association reminds you about protecting the hearing of your family and your self!

Did you know that when MP3 players are purchased as gifts, the majority of purchasers are moms? That finding emerged at the Mommy Tech summit at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show.

But do you know about the potential risks? Kids often don't know how to use audio technology safely and they can harm their hearing as a result. In fact, hearing loss among young people is reported to be on the rise and there are strong concerns that a generation of young people could end up with prevalent hearing loss.

"For some time, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has warned that hearing loss in the United States could rise significantly due to the misuse of personal audio technology," ASHA President Tommie L. Robinson, Jr. explains. "Unfortunately, a report released today by the Kaiser Family Foundation cites some alarming trends about excessive entertainment media consumption among our nation's children, indirectly supporting ASHA's concerns. This should be a warning to parents that they must regulate children's exposure and fully understand the potential health threats associated with misuse and over exposure to such technologies."

"ASHA will continue to bring these issues to the forefront and appreciates the Kaiser Family Foundation's contributions to the national dialogue," Robinson adds.

According to a 2004 study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, children were reported as being exposed to 6 hours and 21 minutes of media (TV, music, internet, etc) per day. By 2009, this statistic had increased dramatically to 7 hours and 38 minutes per day. When media multitasking is taken into account, this leaps to 10 hours and 45 minutes per day. This massive consumption of media has led to decreased grades in school and ASHA contends it puts kids at an increased risk of hearing loss.

One thing that is clear from the study is that parents can be very positive influencers on how their children use entertainment media.

Spread the Following Message
Whether your child received an MP3 player, gaming device, cell phone, laptop, or any other device with headphones, don't overlook the important health threat of hearing loss. Now is the time to reach out to other parents about the importance of hearing loss prevention, the damaging effects of excessive media consumption, and the resources available to them through ASHA.

Here are two simple ways to protect your children's - and your own - hearing.
  • Keep the volume down. A good guide is half volume.
  • Limit listening time. Give your hearing 'quiet breaks'.
Find more information and statistics at ASHA's website. You can also follow their Twitter feed or fan them on Facebook to get real time updates on their work.

Wordless Wednesday - Still Teething

So with Elijah STILL cutting through those 6 teeth after 3 months they seem like they are almost completely in. It is funny to see how quickly his emotions change during the day when the pain comes and goes. He switches from sweet, lovable and snuggly, to silly then to cranky. I try to give him some Tylenol when he gets to the silly point because I know it's only a matter of time before that silliness turns to blood curdling screams. Once he has a little medicine in him he seems to be fine again and usually sits down to read. Once his mouth starts hurting less I can tell because he will start to read out loud. It's so adorable! I wanted to get a picture of his teeth tonight before bed but his mouth hurt a lot today so I didn't want to bother him. He has some days he is fine all day, but others he is in pain all day. Poor little guy!

Happy Elijah

Tackle it Tuesday - Dave's computer covers

This Tuesday since I haven't fully recovered from being sick I wanted to share something I tackled a few weeks back.

Dave is away from his computer quite often and with him getting a new computer monitor from his parents for Christmas I wanted to come up with a solution to keep dust/babies/etc off of it. It also tends to get a bit chilly sometimes in the room if we are out so it will help keep it warm as well.

I took a yard of camo fleece Dave really liked I had tucked away in my fabric stash and this is what I came up with...

The monitor cover is fitted right to size for the monitor and goes on from the top. It is snug fitting, but not too snug.

For the keyboard cover you just slid it in...

... and the mouse just slides in as well. It's like a little mouse sleeping bag! hehe

They were obviously really easy to make and it only took me a few minutes. Measure, cut, sew.
Dave LOVES them and puts them on his computer every night. He cleaned his keyboard really good before using it and it is really helping him keep it dust free!

If you want more info on how to make these for yourself let me know! :) It's such a simple solution to keep your computer monitor and peripherals warm, cozy and dust free!

♥Happy Tuesday!

Cheerios 100,000 Book Giveaway

We have SO many books in our house. We are constantly reading and reading to Elijah. Books are something simple we take for granted.

A recent study shows that the ratio of books per child in middle income neighborhoods is 13 to 1. That is horribly sad! Even worse is that in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is only 1 age appropriate book for every 300 children. Over 80 percent of childcare centers serving low-income children don't have age appropriate books at all!

Wow. That really puts it into perspective. Elijah himself has received over 50 books as gifts from us and other family in his short 15 months of life. That really inspires us to want to help other children be as blessed as ours is.

The Cheerios family of cereals, First Book and Jon Scieszka, author of the popular “Trucktown” series and other children’s books, have joined together to deliver 100,000 books to community-based programs serving children in need – and we’d love your help! All you have to do is go online with your child and test your combined knowledge of children’s books. The trivia questions are related to “Trucktown” and other great children’s books and won't take much of your time for such a great cause.

For every trivia question answered correctly, you can cast one vote for the state you would like to receive books. The five states receiving the most votes will get 20,000 books each, for a total of 100,000 books. Visit www.FirstBook.org/Scieszka to test your knowledge and start voting.

Would you like to win a special Cheerios prize pack for your children or to give away?
Winner will get:
An assortment of books from Cheerios
A box of one of the many varieties of Cheerios cereals
and a $25 gift card to Barns and Noble!!!

To Enter: Visit www.FirstBook.org/Scieszka and answer the question on the right side of the page. If you get it right tell me the name of the book the question was from and the state you voted for. If you get it wrong, hit next question until you get a right answer then tell me the name of the book your correct answered question was from and the state you voted for. (Hint: Most questions can be easily guessed!)

Tackle it Tuesday -Elijah's Christmas Album

We are not yet a month past Christmas but already it feels like it was months ago. The trees and decorations are still up but the presents have all been put away into their new homes and the un-decorating process has begun. The only thing I haven't done at all yet is POST about it and scrapbook it. Usually I don't get to scrapbooking the past Christmas until... wait. Come to think of it LAST Christmas' scrapbook isn't complete yet... yeah. well. ANYWAY.

Every exciting occasion in Elijah's life so far has been documented and mementos saved. It may not be pretty, but even if it's a scribbled note on a napkin, it will be saved to 'translate' into Elijah's life scrapbook goodness. Christmas is obviously no exception. I managed to save at least a piece of EVERY different type of wrapping paper used on his presents this Christmas. Why this insane paper collection you ask?

To make his Christmas scrapbook of course.

And instead of having 20 gift bags stuffed with used wrapping paper, bows, cards and tags shoved in our storage room waiting to be sorted or tossed, this year I sorted it all on my dining room table right after Christmas.
  • I put all the gift bags and tissue paper in the wrapping paper bins to be re-used next year.
  • I put all the tags in a small bag so I can pick them out for the scrapbook.
  • I put all the bows and ribbons in a bag to be picked through for scrapping and then the rest will be put in my bows/ribbons to be reused.
  • I put all the cards together with a rubber band to be put into our card books. (I actually got the card book idea from Dave's mom! She did some for Dave when he was a baby.)
  • I cut pieces from the wrapping paper to use for the scrapbook and then threw the rest away.
In the end I was left with one small bag instead of those 20.

This morning I sat down and sorted the paper again. This time in order for Elijah's Christmas scrapbook. I tried mostly to use the wrapping paper from each person on a separate page, but sometimes if they gave gift bags I used a different paper from another person. I started cutting and gluing this morning while Elijah was still asleep. Here is what I have done so far-

The cover. The basic album was from Target's $1 section. I ALWAYS buy at least 5 every time they offer them! lol I use them for EVERYTHING! The stickers are from Oriental Trading's 2008 after X-mas sale. The little rhinestone jewels on the left side are from my craft stash but came in a bag of assorted ones.
First set of pages will be our family Christmas photo on the left (the small photo of Elijah from the front has to be put on first before I can do this page) and then journaling about this Christmas will be on the right. I will journal what we did for Christmas, etc. Basically sum up the whole holiday.

The second set of pages will have a photo of us and then a photo of Elijah from Christmas morning with his gifts. The journaling will include a list of all the presents we gave him and a bit of detail about our Christmas morning.

This 3rd set of pages is wrapping from the presents from Dave's Parents. Elijah's Grandmom and Granddad. These pages will include the cute tags they put on his presents, a photo of them with him on Christmas, a photo of him with their gifts, and detailed journaling about his Christmas with them.

The fourth set is Elijah's Aunt Jen. I will do the same for her pages.
And his Aunt Cathi & Uncle Mike.
And his Grandma (my Mom) & Pop & Uncle Neil.
And Godmother-Aunt Beth.
His Aunt Donna & Uncle Rob. His Aunt Pat & Uncle Bill. His Aunt Dolly & Uncle Jim.
His Great Grandmom Pyle. His Great Grandmom Holste.
His Uncle Buzzy and Aunt Shayna. His Aunt Mary.
And there is still a few blank pages for people we still haven't gotten to see including Elijah's Great Grandmother (My Granny) his great great Grandmother, and a few friends of ours.

The back cover isn't going to be much more than this, but this is what I have done of it so far. :)

It may not look like much yet, but believe it or not, that was 2 glue sticks worth of gluing. (I need good glue suggestions! What do you guys use?)

I started on the journaling already. I will print it out on our laser printer using Avery's Glossy Clear Permanent Multipurpose Labels. That way when I rub them on the paper you will still be able to see through. If it's a case where the black text might get lost on the paper then I stick the clear sticker to a piece of velum and then glue down the velum. Then it doesn't take away from the design and change the flow of your eyes like bright white does. You can still see the background watermarked under the text.

I will show pictures again when I get more done! :)

Happy Tuesday!

Free sample of Purex Complete 3-in-1 Laundry Sheets

Have you tried Purex Complete 3-in-1 Laundry Sheets yet? It's detergent, softener, and anti-static all in one powerful sheet. I LOVE it! Saves me so much time! You just fill the washer like normal and then throw the sheet in instead of soap, then when you put your clothes in the dryer, just throw it in with them and it acts as a dryer sheet. I honestly don't know the last time our towels were this soft and honestly I don't even think they were this soft when they were new!

Do you want to try Purex Complete 3-in-1 Laundry Sheets for yourself?

You can sign up for a free sample just by doing a short survey (REALLY short, I promise) on how much you already know about Purex Complete and your laundry routine.

Please visit
http://www.trypurex.com
for more information or to sign up.

Elijah Update

January is already zooming by! I need to start sharing all the milestone things Elijah is up to again! (bad mommy writes them down in his book, but doesn't share them with all his fans. lol)

  • Elijah LOVES his playroom and he really plays now. He is so imaginative and creative.
  • He also loves to try to get into things when he thinks no one is looking. Everything mostly is baby proofed but he is so smart he finds ways to get around it. Example: Toy screw driver to pry out the safety outlet cover.
  • He climbs EVERYTHING! He gave Dave a scare the other day by climbing over the BACK of the couch. We have a couch that helps us to keep Elijah in his play side of the room. Its the couch, then his gate. Well he used a toy that was behind the couch and climbed up over. Dave looked over and there Elijah was sitting on the couch playing with the wii-mote. We are SO glad he didn't fall but it was funny. I re-arranged his play area to hopefully keep him from being able to climb too much. He apparently isn't happy with that so he re-arranges any of the bigger toys and furniture he can manage to push himself. Which brings me to my next point....
  • Elijah is STRONG. Stronger than you would think. He makes changing a poop diaper when he is in a poop mood impossible. Which brings me to my next point...
  • Temper Tantrums. They have begun. The wee riggid body flop is getting old. fast. As long as he isn't in danger of hurting himself we ignore him while he does it and he mostly stops within minutes. If we try to stop him or consol him or :::gasp::: give him a time out, he goes on for HOURS. So I let him throw a fit THEN we discuss why his behavior was wrong and other ways he could have handled it. I understand he doesn't know how to handle anger yet but I think explaining that emotions are okay and teaching ways to handle them now will greatly benefit him when he reaches :::cough cough::: the terrible twos and understands more. Some of his anger is not because of pain though. Which brings us to....
  • Elijah STILL has 6 teeth coming in at once. The top front 4 and the bottom outside 2. That will make 8 teeth total! They are just coming slow! (They started through in October!)
  • He loves to sit and read even more now in his little reading corner in his playroom. He now holds the books (mostly) up the right direction, reads left to right, and even 'talks' as he reads. I think he is reading them to his animals! So cute. He does this for up to 45 minutes at a time!
  • He loves to take baths still! He now 'swims' in the big tub though. He is too big for his baby tub. He started that in October, but now we do it all the time. He is so funny with his splashing. He also loves to scoot around in the water!
  • He is starting to really grasp using his spoon at mealtimes himself. Well sort of. He turns it upside down before it reaches his mouth a lot and tries to 'dip' more then 'scoop' the spoon. He loves to dip crackers into whatever soft foods he is eating and I think he thinks using the spoon is the same concept. so I blame myself for teaching him that. lol
  • He also loves to sing and dance still and is even better at it now! We love it!
  • He can run, walk, walk backwards and hardly ever crawls anymore.
  • He makes animal noises. Some of his favorites are a pig and he makes a snorting sound and a cow. He's got a great "MOO!" lol
  • He says TONS of words. The newest are duck, eat (before he just signed it. now he signs and says it) and nose (while sticking his finger in it). His favorite words are yes, nose, dadda, juice, milk, and eat.
  • 'dika dika' is also a favorite word. Although we have no idea what it means. lol
  • He now says complete sentences. Mostly babble but with real words thrown in. You can tell by the pattern and rhythm of the sentences he really has the form to speak the sentences, just doesn't know the words yet.
  • He pointed to his diaper without us asking tonight. Usually if we ask him if he needs changed or a new diaper he will point to his diaper. Tonight he came to his fence and was pointing to it himself for a change.
That's all I can think of now. I PROMISE! This will become a regular update again! :)

Do you need a new more professional photo of you to use online? I know I do, and I hate to say it, but MOST of you do too. I see a lot of photos that have bad lighting, too much make up, or the person just looks weird.

Your photo online is your first impression and tells the viewer A LOT about you. Whether you are throwing up gang signs, making kissie faces, looking emo, using props (such as a drink, guns or laptops), including other people such as your children, ANYTHING in that photo is making a statement. What kind of statement is it making will help determine that first impression.

Do you want to be considered professional? Then pictures like this probably won't fly:

Yes. I know I am funny and adorable. But wouldn't you feel different about me if you had first seen that picture instead of this one:

Point made. Right?

There is a lot more I can say on this subject but I will save that for another post. I just wanted to share this great opportunity for some of you to get a new photo to use.

Estée Lauder is giving away complimentary makeovers, a free photo and a 10 day supply of foundation! You have to book an appointment but it's absolutely FREE! I LOVE Estee Lauder and think this is a great promotion.

Right now they have two dates listed in TX and CA but they will add more as the event travels.

Free 2010 Calendar

One of my favorite things about ordering from Oriental Trading at the end or beginning of the year (well besides the awesome stuff they have on sale) is getting one of their calendars. They are full sized calendars featuring recommended theme of items at the top. They have money saving offers, tips and idea starters to help you plan fun events! My favorite part of these calendars though is within the dates themselves. Ever hear of National Hug Day? National Ice Cream Day? If not then you need one of these calendars! They come with the months full of unique dates to celebrate every month!
Tip: Use these fun dates and include a special surprise, note or card in your child's backpack, lunchbox or at mealtime!
I especially love these calendars for blogging and plan to utilize mine this year to write examiner posts with toys themed for the different events!

The great thing about this calendar too is that you don't have to make an Oriental Trading order to get one if you don't want to! They give them away FREE to anybody who fills out their form while supplies last!

Pop-Tart's Sprinklings Mom

Our family LOVES Pop-tarts. We mix it up a little bit but we normally stick to (always frosted) Strawberry, Cherry, Blueberry, Chocolate, and Brown Sugar Cinnamon. We don't toast them but eat them straight out of the wrapper for snacks. We usually go through a big box every 1 to 2 weeks. Luckily I am a Sprinklings Mom so we get COUPONS!

Does your family love Pop-Tarts? Then you need to sign up to become a Sprinklings Mom too!

By becoming a Sprinklings Mom you will get coupons, exclusive offers, special promotions and one of my favorite perks... SAMPLES! You even get to try new flavors before they come out! We were excited a few months ago when we got to try the new blueberry muffin and recently we received the new 'Wild Grape' flavor to try out too before it hits stores. (PS- YUM!)

Joining Sprinklings is FREE and only takes a minute to fill out the form!

For more information or to join, please visit: http://www.poptarts.com/moms
