Review: Novapolt USB 3.0 External DVD and CD Drive #externaldvddrive

I have an extra laptop, Asus brand, running windows 8 and an HP tower PC running Windows 7 in which the DVD drive stopped working, instead of taking the time to replace them I thought an external drive, like the Novapolt USB 3.0 External DVD and CD Drive, would be a good quick fix so my son could use the laptop to play games. It's small, only slightly larger than a CD jewel case and requires no outside power source which makes it super simple to use and transport. The wire is hardwired into the case at the bottom and folds into itself for storage. Great design idea but at a cost, it's super short wire so you have to be able to sit it right next to the computer. To use this on the tower PC you there's no way with USB ports in the middle that it would not just hang in midair so I needed to stack up some things to hold it up in order to plug it in and it still be sitting level. It has no problem plugging and playing on either PC, even booting from CD in bios but it does take much longer than the standard drive, sometimes over a minute in tests. Reading both CDs and DVDs had no issues though I did notice it was a little louder than the standard drives when it was spinning up, especially with my DVDs. CD writing speed was a little slower than my standard unit but still did a fairly good job.  I think this little drive works well so far until I replace the computers real drives. It's a good drive for the value!
Bottom Line:
I like and give it 4 out of 5 stars.
Would I recommend it to my family and friends? Yes, depending on the circumstance, like as a temporary fix.
Would I buy it myself based on my experiences with this review? Yes, to use as a temporary drive it does what it is supposed to.
